am stared after him, dumbfounded for a moment. “Wait!” she scrambled to her feet, throwing herself in front of the door before he could escape. “What are you doing?”

“Going as your need is done,” Abednego answered hesitantly, eying her warily. “As you have wished since first you saw me. You cannot bind yourself to a man you do not know, nor to a Guardian who is a stranger to you. The thought causes you distress and you try to flee, and I or another impede you, which causes you to feel more distressed and increases your fear of me. So I leave you to make up your mind and summon me at your need.”

“What is it with you people and giving me what I asked for just when I don’t want it anymore?” Sam huffed in exasperation, drawing a hand over her face. She leaned against the door. “The simple fact of the matter is, the freaking Panthyr is right. I can’t just let you become a rampaging Aughisky, but I can’t marry a total stranger just because he’s potentially dangerous—that’s still a very valid point. I also can’t have a Nephilim-hunting partner who is a total stranger, for all the same reasons. Well, most of them. The point is, you’re never going to not be a stranger if you give me the space I’ve been asking for.

“And anyways, I was asking for space because I was scared of you, because I just assumed all kinds of things and we started out on the wrong foot. And then I ran, and you chased, and I got captured by the Fae…rie…and freaked the heck out. And then I trusted them, but they lied to me, and then there was Ilya, and you and everybody else wanted me to just marry you and I was freaking the heck out—and you just can’t ask me to make an important, life-altering decision when I’m freaking the heck out, okay? Actually, you can’t ask me to make a life-altering decision without a trial period, or an in-depth class or something. I mean, you didn’t even take me on a date yet, I just woke up naked in your bed and you all expected me to just be cool with that, and I can’t!

“But I also just assumed things out of the blue about you that I’m starting to realize were wrong. For instance, rape, sex and sundry—you haven’t been asking me for those, you’ve been asking for the commands that are supposed to keep you from turning evil. Which is sounding more and more reasonable the longer I spend time with…any of you. I don’t trust Ilya. I think I managed to alienate Shawn. I never know what any of the Fae…rie…whose-its mean, or want, or who they even are half the time. And those are the good guys! I’ve met the bad guys, I didn’t like them. I tried going home, and I got betrayed by the people I thought I knew, arrested, accused
